WARNING: Caution should be taken when Setting a coilsrping trap in this manner as it takes good strength in your hands. If you don't have good strength in your hands you should set the traps with your feet or buy a setter to help compress the springs.
This is how I personally set my coilsprings. This trap is done for the season, and has not been re-dyed and waxed. It took a nice coyote this year and it polished all the dye and Wax off it as it was set in the sand, LOL>
This trap is a 1.75 Duke OS. NOTE that I do set my coyote and fox traps like this, however, I always have my waders on so I don't transfer scents.
Step 1.
Place the Heel of your hands on each lever Kind of like you are holding a cup with both hands.
Step 2.
Press down on both Levers at the same time compressing the springs and letting the jaws Free.
Step 3.
Now that you have the springs compressed and the jaws free, you can hold the jaws in place with your fingers, and flop the Dog over the Jaw.
Step 4.
With the dog over the jaw, you can now place the Dog into the notch on the pan, Lifting the pan with your thumb.
Step 5.
I have my traps Night latched, so I set the dog deeply into the notch on the pan and then adjust by putting my index finger under the pan, and my thumb on top and slowly pull down until I hear the Dog Snap into place in my Night Latch. All of this should be done while holding the trap under the lever by the swivel, or by holding the trap from underneath if center swiveled so you don't get your fingers in the levers in case it goes off. Also, this part should be done from under the loose Jaw. .
Step 6.
Now that you have your Dog into the night latch, I tap the end of the dog a bit if needed to bring the pan level with the rest of the trap. I am using plyers in this picture, but generally I use my trowel for this.
And finally the trap is set and ready to be placed in the ground.
