My bro and i trap alot of rivers and creeks and we found that this will put fur in the shed...
there are usually trees that have fallen across or into the water. the first thing we do is make sure that there has been some activity on the log ( this is done by looking for claw scratches and foot prints and scat on the log).
once we have decided that there is some activity, we go out from the bank about 2 foot and chop a trap bed w/ our ax. we like our traps to be level with the rest of the log (if ya go too deep, ya can pack mud or moss in the hole). place the trap in the bed and seat firmly. we cover ours with moss and anchor to a drownding rig.
we sometimes place a chunk of fish or squirt some fish oil on the log as an attractant.
we have caught several coons, mink, and possoms...even a fox this way.
